Edsel Ford, Dearborn and Fordson high schools planning Memorial Day ceremonies

All three traditional public high schools in Dearborn are planning special events before Memorial Day to remember fallen soldiers from their schools.

All three events will take place in the morning of the week before Memorial Day, and all will remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Visitors are welcome to attend the ceremonies.

Dearborn High School is holding its ceremony on May 24 starting at 9 a.m. in the school auditorium.

The event will honor Dearborn High graduates and others who lost their lives in the service of our country. The ceremony will specifically highlight the life of James Huard, who has a monument named after him on the school grounds.

Fordson High School will hold an event on May 25, also at 9 a.m. in the school auditorium.

Current Fordson students will highlight fallen soldiers from World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War. The event will be emceed by Lisa Lark, a former Dearborn teacher and author of the book “All They Left Behind: Legacies of Men and Women of the Wall.”  Shaun Wilson will be the keynote speaker. An eight-year veteran of the U.S. Marines, he is seasoned strategic communication, marketing and business management professional with more than 20 years of experience.

American Legion Post 364 will provide an honor guard.

Edsel Ford High School will hold its ceremony on Thursday, May 26, starting at 7:50 a.m. in the school auditorium. Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, Superintendent Glenn Maleyko, school board members and others will participate in the event, the longest active Memorial Day celebration in the district. Lisa Lark will again lead the school’s Rose Ceremony honoring the 23 Edsel Ford graduates who gave their lives during the Vietnam War.

A color guard from the James Huard 267 Post will present and retire the colors during the ceremony.

Dearborn Schools will also be well represented in the City of Dearborn’s Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30. Several schools have bands performing in the parade, and some school-related groups will also participate. The Memorial Day Parade will start at 10 a.m., but it is preceded by a ceremonial funeral procession at 9:40 a.m. The parade begins at Michigan Avenue and Maple and travels to the Henry Ford Centennial Library.
