OnePlus Ace Racing Edition is here, looks like a watered-down OnePlus 10 Pro

Only a few weeks after the launch of the regular OnePlus Ace, we have something different.

TL;DR
  • OnePlus has launched the OnePlus Ace Racing Edition.
  • The phone looks a bit like the OnePlus 10 Pro but with some altered innards from the OnePlus Ace.
  • The phone is exclusive to China at the moment, with a starting price of CNY 1,999 (~$297).

OnePlus’ lineup just got a little more confusing. Only a few weeks ago, the company introduced a new smartphone line known as Ace. The OnePlus Ace joins the Nord, Nord N, and traditionally numbered family of OnePlus phones.

Now, we have a slight alteration of the OnePlus Ace in the OnePlus Ace Racing Edition (h/t Fone Arena). Confusingly, the phone looks like the OnePlus 10 Pro but has some specs from the OnePlus Ace — although those specs are also very different. More confusing still, the Racing Edition’s display is a downgrade.

OnePlus Ace Racing Edition: Features and specs

The display of the OnePlus Ace Racing Edition is an LCD model. This is a downgrade from the vanilla Ace’s OLED panel. However, the LCD model does retain the vanilla Ace’s 120Hz variable refresh rate, which is nice to see. The display on the Racing Edition is also slightly smaller at 6.59 inches compared to the vanilla model’s 6.7 inches.

The design of the phone is also wildly different. The OnePlus Ace has its own unique design flair when compared to other OnePlus phones, but the Racing Edition looks like a watered-down OnePlus 10 Pro. The cameras are also very different between the two models, with the Racing Edition having an inferior 64MP wide + 8MP ultrawide + 2MP macro setup on the back. The fingerprint scanner moves from underneath the display to the side of the phone as well.

As far as processing, though, the OnePlus Ace Racing Edition matches its namesake. It has a MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Max with up to 12GB of RAM. It maxes out at 256GB of internal storage, however, which is not as much as the 512GB maximum offered by the OnePlus Ace.

Finally, the Racing Edition bests its namesake when it comes to battery life, as it has a 5,000mAh cell compared to the Ace’s 4,500mAh cell. However, it will charge slower at 67W compared to the Ace’s 150W charging, which is one of its star features.

Pricing and availability

So far, the OnePlus Ace Racing Edition is only available in China. It comes in three configurations:

  • 8GB + 128GB — CNY 1,999 (~$297)
  • 8GB + 256GB — CNY 2,199 (~$327)
  • 12GB + 256GB — CNY 2,499 (~$371)

It is likely OnePlus will eventually bring the Ace Racing Edition to other countries, but there’s no word on where or when yet.
