Candidates for Senate, Congress, and other local offices were anxiously awaiting the results of Primary Election Day after polls closed on May 17, 2022.
News 13 followed more than 60 races, including the North Carolina District 11 Congressional race, the U.S. Senate race and the Asheville mayoral race.
In one of the most-watched races, first-term U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn conceded his Republican primary race for North Carolina's 11th Congressional District seat to state Sen. Chuck Edwards.
Edwards will face current Buncombe County Commissioner Jasmine Beach-Ferrara in November.

Polls opened across North Carolina at 6:30 a.m. As of 4 p.m., Buncombe County officials report one precinct has not reported and 17,505 voters have turned out bringing the total to more than 42,000 people who have now cast their votes across the county.
More than 24,500 voters took advantage of early voting. You can see a breakdown of how many people voted at each precinct here.
Currently, elections officials say First Born Baptist Church is maintaining the highest voter turnout with 412 people followed by Ira B. Jones with 396 voters. Those who haven’t voted yet can check the wait counts here.
Polls in Buncombe County are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. As long as you are in line by 7:30 p.m., you will have the chance to vote. You must vote at the polling place in your assigned precinct. If you need help finding your voting location, enter your name at the Voter Search Tool.
Curbside voting
Another feature Buncombe County Election Services offers is curbside voting for those who are unable to go inside the precinct due to age or disability. Just pull up to the curbside voting sign, and an election worker will come out and help you.
Need to turn in an Absentee Ballot?
The deadline to return the completed Absentee Ballot is Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at 5 p.m. Absentee ballots CANNOT be returned at polling precincts. Absentee ballots cannot be emailed or faxed. Request forms that are hand-delivered to the office at 59 Woodfin Place must be returned only by the voter or the voter’s near relative. Absentee ballots also may be mailed to P.O. Box 7468 Asheville, NC 28802. Ballots must be postmarked on or before Tuesday, May 17, 2022 and received by Friday, May 20.
Closely-watched races
North Carolina's District 11 Congressional seat is one of several closely watched races of this primary. Incumbent Rep. Madison Cawthorn is trying to hold on to his nomination against seven Republican challengers. Voters will also have to whittle down 25 candidates from two parties who want to succeed retiring GOP Sen. Richard Burr.
