SATURDAY, 5/21

Boys track & field

DIVISION II ORRVILLE DISTRICT Black River finished third and Northwestern seventh in the team standings. Andon O'Neal won the 300 hurdles (40.93 seconds) and finished third in the 110 hurdles to lead the Pirates. Other regional qualifiers for BR were Braylon O'Neal in the 300 hurdles (second), the 4x400 relay (second), Treyce Wood in the 800 (fourth) and the 4x800 relay (fourth). Jacob Wakefield finished second in the high jump to pace the Huskies. Also qualifying for regionals were Weston Arthur in the 400 (third), Nolan Hartsel in the pole vault (third), the 4x200 relay (third) and the 4x400 relay (third).

Baseball

BLACK RIVER 14, BROOKSIDE 0 Black River cruised to a five-inning win over Brookside in Lorain County 8 action, clinching the LC8 title outright for its first championship since winning the Firelands Conference in 1993. Cannon Jackson and Evan Ladina both slashed two hits and knocked in three runs to lead the Pirates, while John Kray and Tyler Mrakuzic both added two hits. Noah Hopek tossed a one-hitter with six strikeouts to earn the win on the mound.

CRESTVIEW 16, SOUTH CENTRAL 5 Crestview knocked off Firelands Conference rival South Central. Mason Ringler paced the Cougars with two hits, including a three-run home run, and five RBIs. Hunter George added three hits and two RBIs and also picked up the win on the mound, while Jarek Ringler and Owen Barker both added two hits and two RBIs. Karl Ferber, Kayden Hauler and Gunner Ray all had two hits to lead the Trojans.

HILLSDALE 14, RITTMAN 0 Hillsdale rolled to a five-inning Wayne County Athletic League win over Rittman. Jax Rogers led the Falcons with three hits, including a homer, and five RBIs. Caden Fickes added a homer and four RBIs, while Ethan Goodwin knocked in three runs. Nick Kandel chipped in two hits, and Braylen Jarvis drove in two runs. Mark Abel earned the win, striking out six in three innings.

THURSDAY, 5/19

Baseball

SOUTH CENTRAL 13, UPPER SCIOTO VALLEY 3 South Central cruised to a five-inning Division IV sectional final victory over Upper Scioto Valley. Karl Ferber (three RBIs), Kayden Hauler (two runs scored) and Brandon Mitchell all smacked two hits to lead the Trojans. Gunner Ray added three RBIs, while Isaiah White and Hagen Adams both chipped in two RBIs. Sam Seidel (three walks) and Eric Sanders (two walks) both scored two runs. Ferber earned the mound win, striking out one in three innings. 

BLACK RIVER 7, WELLINGTON 0 Hunter McJunkins and Noah Hopek combined to throw a two-hitter as Black River blanked Wellington in a Division III sectional final. McJunkins struck out seven over five scoreless innings, while Hopek closed out the win with two strikeouts in two perfect innings. Ethan Foster slashed two hits and knocked in two runs to lead the Pirates offense. Eric Groesser added two RBIs, while Hopek scored three runs.

DALTON 7, MAPLETON 1 Mapleton fell to Dalton in a Division IV sectional final. Nick Wrobleski drove in a run to lead the Mounties, while Blake Benner doubled and scored a run.

COLONEL CRAWFORD 6, CRESTVIEW 2 Crestview dropped a Division III sectional semifinal to visiting Colonel Crawford. No further information was provided.

WESTERN RESERVE 19, NEW LONDON 6 Western Reserve picked up a five-inning win over New London in a Division III sectional semifinal. No futher information was provided.

Baseball

SOUTH CENTRAL 9, MONROEVILLE 0 After earning at least a share of the Firelands Conference championship on May 13, South Central clinched the outright title with a five-inning win over Monroeville. Eric Sanders picked up the win on the mound, tossing a two-hitter with two strikeouts. Sam Seidel (two RBIs), Kayden Hauler and Gunner Ray all slashed two hits and scored two runs to lead the Trojans.

HAWKEN 12, NORTHWESTERN 2 Hawken picked up a five-inning win over Northwestern in a Division III sectional final. Cayden Fiala singled and knocked in a run to lead the Huskies, while Jamison Holtz drove in a run.

Boys tennis

DIV. I PORT CLINTON DISTRICT Ashland's Ben Sinchok was eliminated from the tournament after falling 6-0, 6-2 to Toledo St. Francis' Zach Amonett in the first round.

TUESDAY, 5/17 

Baseball

MAPLETON 1, ANDREWS OSBORNE 0 Mapleton went on the road and blanked Andrews Osborne in a Division IV sectional semifinal. No further information was provided.

Softball

Freshman phenom: Ashland softball freshman Makaree Chapman is raking at the plate

MAPLETON 11, CRESTVIEW 3 Mapleton knocked off Crestview in a Firelands Conference battle. Sophie Durbin went 2 for 3 with a walk to lead the Cougars.

MONDAY, 5/16

Baseball

NORTHWESTERN 4, TUSLAW 2 Northwestern knocked off Tuslaw in a Division III sectional semifinal. Luke Wright went the distance on the mound to earn the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with 10 strikeouts. Brandon Barnette (double) and Caden Fiala both slashed two hits to lead the offense.

All-around player: South Central's Sam Seidel can do it all on the diamond

WELLINGTON 7, LOUDONVILLE 1 Loudonville's season came to an end with a Division III district semifinal loss to Wellington. Peyton Regan slashed two doubles to lead the Redbirds.

MASSILLON WASHINGTON 8, ASHLAND 2 Ashland dropped a nonleague game to Massillon Washington. Ethan Bunce drove in two runs to lead the Arrows, while Kamden Mowry slashed a double.

Softball

MONROEVILLE 8, SOUTH CENTRAL 7 South Central fell to Monroeville in Firelands Conference action. The Trojans can still clinch a share of their first-ever FC title, though, if they beat Crestview on Friday. Maddy Prater paced SC with three hits, while Kaylee Richards slashed two hits and knocked in three runs.
