A group of truckers has announced it plans to return to the Washington D.C. area to resume protests.
"The People's Convoy" announced during a live-streamed Ohio rally it plans to return to Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland on May 17. The group also announced the plans on its official Facebook page, saying a rally was planned for 6 p.m. that Tuesday.
May 17th. WE ARRIVE AT HAGERSTOWN SPEEDWAY!!!” the post on Facebook says “We greatly appreciate them having The People’s Convoy back!!
Hagerstown Speedway was used as a staging area for the protest earlier this year in March. The group traveled from their staging area to D.C. almost daily for three weeks last time they were in the region.
The group previously protested COVID-19 mandates, which are now almost completely absent throughout America, except for some schools and medical facilities.
We encourage everyone to join us in this journey back to DC. Immediate needs are money and boots on the ground. The only place to donate money is through our website or cash delivered in person," The Freedom Convoy says on its website.
Previously, authorities in D.C. used buses, garbage trucks, and more to control traffic when the trucker convoy drove into town.
Now, speaking with WJLA News, D.C. police say they are ready for any protests, including pro-choice rallies held in the city following a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that would overturn Roe V. Wade.
During a rally for the trucker convoy, one speaker promised to come back "with teeth and a backbone!"
When we left, you guys laughed at us," the speaker said. "You made fun of us.
Enough is enough. When we go back to DC, we are not the same convoy that went there the first time. We are not the same convoy that left there. We are coming back with teeth and a backbone!" the speaker said as the crowd cheered.
A spokesperson with the Hagerstown Speedway told Washingtonian the location expects possibly "15 to 20" trucks will be set up at its staging area for about a "week or two."
