This comes hours after Georgia Stanway confirmed her departure from the Citizens agreeing to a three-year deal with Bayern Munich.

The news has come as a blow to some City fans on social media with speculation also surrounding the future of full-back Lucy Bronze.

Weir has been a standout performer in some of Man City’s biggest games in recent seasons.

The Scotland forward wowed fans and pundits with some audacious wonder goals most notably in duels against neighbours Man United.

Efforts include a classy 81st-minute chip from distance that paved the way for a 1-0 City home win against United in February.

A victory that would help the club in their quest to finish third and qualify for a Champions League spot.

And Weir’s knack for netting wonder goals saw her nominated for Fifa’s 2021 Puskas Award for the second year in succession last November.

Weir, who sealed a 2018 transfer to the Citizens from Liverpool, has made 73 top-flight appearances for the side.

The forward, who is the inaugural winner of the SFWA Scottish Women’s Player of the Year award, netted six goals in 19 WSL appearances this term.

Speculation concerning a Weir Madrid move comes on a day in which Stanway bid farewell to City and its fans after her seven-year spell.

In a message shared via her Twitter page, the forward wrote: “I joined Manchester City with a dream of becoming a professional footballer.

“I have been grateful to call it my home for the past seven years.

“Today I leave as the club’s leading top scorer, with over 150 appearances and seven domestic trophies.

“A huge thank you to all the staff and team-mates that have supported me on my journey.

“And to the fans who have given me unconditional support throughout.
