Margot Robbie has been busy filming upcoming movie Barbie as of late, which sees the Australian actor star as the iconic doll figure, but there's another project that could be in the works for her.

According to Hollywood superproducer Jerry Bruckheimer, the 31-year-old is in talks to star in a female-led spin-off of iconic adventure franchise Pirates of the Caribbean.

Bruckheimer confirmed in an interview with The Sunday Times that Robbie is discussing the launch of her own Pirates of the Caribbean film series, while another script is being worked on to reboot the main series.

Johnny Depp, who had a prominent role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the last five movies, is reportedly unlikely to return amid his public court battle with ex-wife Amber Heard.

Clarifying that Robbie may star in just one of the two different Pirates of the Caribbean projects he's working on, he said: 'Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie.

He continued: 'We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without.'

In June 2020, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Robbie was set to star in a spin-off film of the franchise written by Christina Hodson, who also worked on her Harley Quinn film Birds Of Prey.

Bruckheimer was previously asked by the same new outlet in 2019 whether Depp would return to the Pirates of the Caribbean series, at which point he said: 'Not at this point,' but added: 'The future is yet to be decided.'

Yet, according to the Daily Mail, Depp made it clear during his Defamation trial with Amber Heard that if Disney offer him all the money 'on this earth,' he would not reprise his famed role.

Robbie, who also stars in 1930s-set crime drama Amsterdam, to be released in November, previously opened up about the pressures of playing the role of Barbie.

Speaking to British Vogue in June 2021, she said of playing the character: 'Right, it comes with a lot of baggage!'

She added: 'And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear "Barbie" and think, "I know what that movie is going to be," and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, "Oh, well, maybe I don’t..."'

Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell and America Ferrera are just a few of the famous faces joining Robbie in a stellar cast line-up for the hotly anticipated movie.

Robbie, who tends to keep her private life out of the limelight, rose to fame with 2013 film, The Wolf of Wall Street, where she was cast alongside Oscar-winning DiCaprio.
