ROANE COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) - A man suspected of murdering two people in Roane County has been arrested, according to the Roane County Sheriff’s Office.

Roane County deputies and Kingston Police Department officers responded to 2373 Sugar Grove Valley Road in Harriman for a warrants check on July 25 at approximately 6:15 p.m.

A man at the residence, identified as Lonnie Dale Wright, was arrested and charged in connection to a double homicide that took place in May at 662 Buck Creek Road in East Roane County.

“Wright is suspected of unlawfully entering the residence and murdering Steve Groover and Cindy Scruggs, in their home on Buck Creek Road in Kingston on May 16, 2022,” Sheriff Jack Stockton said.

Groover was 67 years old and Scruggs was 62 years old, according to officials.

Investigators did not reveal how the two died, but did say that both bodies were sent to the Knoxville Forensic Center for an autopsy.

Wright was charged with two counts of First Degree Murder, Especially Aggravated Robbery, Especially Aggravated Burglary, Burglary of a Motor Vehicle, Vandalism and Theft of a Motor Vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
