This early start to the fire season has now led Cal Fire to suspend burn permits for Madera, Merced, and Mariposa Counties.

The agency says warmer temperatures, reduced snowpack, and earlier spring snowmelt have created more intense dry seasons and this makes forests more susceptible to severe wildfire.

Burn permits are suspended effective May 23 and the suspension does not apply to campfires within organized campgrounds or on private property.
