(Guthrie Center) Woodward-Granger’s pitching staff racked up seventeen strikeouts in an 11-2 season opening win at ACGC on Monday.
Starting pitcher Brody Nardini went five innings. He gave up one hit, an RBI single by Miles Kading in the 5th. Nardini worked around six walks with the help of 13 K’s. ACGC’s only other hit in the game came on slow roller from Reid Rumelhart off of Schaefer Hanson in the 6th. Rumelhart worked his way around to score on an error and two wild pitches. Rumelhart’s infield single was the only hiccup on Hanson’s stat line as he struck out the next three batters he faced in his lone inning on the mound. 8th grader Brody Worley pitched a 1-2-3 7th with a pop up, strikeout, and groundout.
ACGC used four pitchers in the loss. Brock Littler gave up one hit and four walks with three strikeouts in three plus innings. Andrew Mahaffey allowed three hits and three walks in 2 2/3 with three strikeouts. Tegan Slaybaugh walked five and gave up one hit in his inning of relief. Alex Spack came in and got the final out. Woodward-Granger drew ten walks and were hit by a pitch four times. The visitors managed five hits.
The big inning was the 4th when Hanson and Sam Sejnoha drew back to back walks, Don David reached on an error, Jayden Flugge-Smith had a sac fly to center, Brody Nardini was hit by a pitch, and Collin Nardini reached on an error. It extended the advantage to 5-0. They plated a pair of runs in the 6th on Kaden Seeman’s 2-run single and added four more in the 7th.
Miles Kading and Reid Rumelhart accounted for ACGC’s two hits. Brock Littler drew three walks and stole four basses. The Chargers return to action Friday at Glidden-Ralston.
