It was a busy weekend for Dawson County Fire & EMS, as crews responded to three separate incidents over a 3-day period.
On Friday afternoon, Dawson County, Pickens County and Big Canoe fire crews were called to a home off McElroy Mountain Road, finding smoke showing from a garage.
Crews began an aggressive attack that quickly brought the fire under control.
"Credit should be given to the neighbors who alerted the homeowners and helped keep the fire in check, by having a working fire extinguisher," Dawson County EMA Director/Fire Chief Danny Thompson said Monday morning. "These actions likely prevented serious injuries and minimized damage to the residence."
The following afternoon, Thompson said crews were called to a residence off Moss Road in response to a reported kitchen fire.
"Engine 3 arrived on scene, with smoke showing from a residential structure," Thompson said. "Crews were able to get a quick knockdown on the fire."
The cause of that fire was said to be cooking-related.
Then on Sunday evening, the county fire department and Sheriff's Office received a call regarding two canoers on the Etowah River who were unable to complete their trip due to a combination of darkness and a possible medical emergency.
"The Georgia State Patrol Aviation Division was able to locate the subjects and guide ground crews to their location without incident," Thompson said. "This is a reminder to always plan your trip and know how long it will take from one put in to the next."
Thompson added that Sunday's incident served as a reminder to keep your cell phone charged, and to take an extra power source on any excursions.
No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.
