FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WLUK) -- A man on trial for the murder of his grandmother has been found guilty after a six-day trial in Fond du Lac County.
A jury found Gregory A. Spittel, 33, guilty of second-degree reckless homicide, battery or threat to a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer, disorderly conduct and possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia.
According to the criminal complaint, Spittel was upset with his grandmother, Carole Foreman, 75, for giving information to police which resulted in his arrest and to lose custody of his children.
The attack happened on Aug. 23, 2019, in the city of Waupun.
“The assault included Spittel delivering blows to Carol Foreman’s head, likely with hand(s) forming a fist, which drove the back of Carol Foreman’s head into the concrete flooring causing laceration to rear of head and subsequent blood loss,” the complaint states. “Spittel then left Carol Foreman severely injured and unable to care for herself or call or help alone in the basement while he went to his second floor bedroom to sleep.”
Spittel asked a neighbor to call 911 the next day. Foreman was taken to the hospital, where she died a few days later of "multiple blunt force injuries," the complaint states.
District Attorney Eric Toney said, “This was a devastating loss to the family and today’s verdict help bring justice to the victim’s family and friends as they still mourn the loss of their mom, grandmother, and friend. The jury found the defendant guilty of murder, rejecting the defendant’s claim that the ‘cartel’ was responsible for the murder. I’m grateful to the Waupun Police Department for an excellent investigation that helped bring justice to the family in a challenging case and I thank the jury for their service.”
Spittel's sentencing date has been set for July 20.
