HURT, Va. (WFXR) — A call about a house fire turned into an explosion in Pittsylvania County Friday evening, sending two firefighters to the hospital.

The Hurt Volunteer Fire Department says crews were dispatched to a house fire at approximately 6:42 p.m. on Friday, May 13. When they arrived, crews found heavy flames coming from two sides of the home.

About 15 minutes into battling the blaze, there was an explosion from several oxygen tanks stored inside the house, according to officials. Two Hurt firefighters were taken to the hospital for treatment following the explosion.

The department says one firefighter had second-degree burns and the other was monitored, but had no injuries. Both firefighters were treated and released.

“Both of our guys are extremely lucky in this incident and we are very thankful that their training kicked in and got them out of there!” the Hurt Volunteer Fire Department wrote on Facebook.

Members of Gretna Fire and Rescue, the Renan Fire Department, the Riceville Java Fire Department, and Pittsylvania County Public Safety reportedly helped battle Friday’s blaze.
