Gas prices have jumped more than 15 cents in one week, according to AAA.
The national average for regular gas set a record Monday, hitting $4.48 a gallon.
In Louisiana, prices are also up. Right now, the average for a gallon of regular is $4.14 compared to $3.85 one month ago.
WDSU found one gas station in New Orleans with prices as high as $4.66, others offered gasoline as low as $4.09.
"They're ridiculous," Bill Richins said. "I blew up my car last week, and I was going to go out and buy a car, and I looked at the prices and not only are the gas prices high, the new car prices are high."
Richins said he has decided to take public transit for the time being.
"I'm retired. I can afford a car," Richins said. "But I've decided that I'm going to see what happens to the gas prices and the cost of vehicles."
Other drivers tell WDSU that they have to have a car for work.
"I move a lot around the city, so I'm just constantly putting gas in the car all day. It's horrible," Troyshaun Haymond said.
Experts said there are several, simple ways to boost fuel efficiency.
They suggest removing excess weight from the vehicle and making sure all four tires are properly inflated.
People are also encouraged to drive with the air conditioner off and windows down when in traffic and the opposite when driving on the highway.
Using cruise control can also help improve gas mileage. However, that is not advised if one is driving in a hilly or mountainous area because the vehicle will use extra fuel to accelerate up an incline.
