Possible Arson Sparks 3-Alarm Fire at Mall | San Bernardino

05.15.2022 | 6:48 PM | SAN BERNARDINO – Authorities responded to reports of a structure fire at the abandoned Carousel Mall in San Bernardino.

Arriving units found a possible arson suspect inside the burning building and called SBPD to detain the individual.

Heavy pressurized smoke was coming from the interior of the building making it difficult for firefighters to locate the source of the fire. It took nearly 40 minutes for firefighters to find fire.

The battalion chief called for a second alarm, and soon after, a third alarm.

Although smoke was visible from the outside, the majority of the fire was interior.

A fire engine containing additional supplies and air tanks for firefighters had a mechanical failure, and was unable to bring additional supplies to the fire. A request to outside agencies was put in.

Due to the mall being old and abandoned, there are many hazards within the inside of the building and the sprinklers are not properly functioning.

Firefighters continue to battle the stubborn fire and attempt to gain control.
