ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) – Purina hosted its 21st drive-thru food pantry earlier Tuesday.

The distribution was part of Purina Cares Day, an annual campaign partnering with the St. Louis Area Foodbank to make sure local families and pets have food. Kim Beardslee, the Director of Community Affairs for Purina, said, “Community service has been engrained in this company since the beginning. This is apart of who we are.”

Purina had enough food on hand to feed 400 families for a month. For families with pets, they passed out a free bag of pet food.

Beardslee said, “This is our biggest initiative where all of our associates come out. It’s a day to celebrate our community and give back.”

Former St. Louis Blues player David Backes was also present. He was representing his charity, Athletes for Animals. The charity just wrapped up its one million mile challenge, which encouraged people and their pets to be active and get outdoors. For every mile walked, money was donated to the charity.

Purina presented the charity with a check for $100,000, which will help support animal welfare organizations around St. Louis and the U.S. Backes said, “We’re really grateful to be a part of that partnership with Purina.”
