The deep white moon was visible through clouds before taking on a reddish hue.
It was the first total lunar eclipse of the year.
During a lunar eclipse, the sun, earth, and moon align enough for the earth to block some sunlight from reaching the moon. During a total lunar eclipse, the moon is fully covered by the earth's shadow. The moon turns a red color during a total lunar eclipse because of the way light is bent and scattered. Therefore, it is referred to as a ‘blood moon.’
If you missed this one, set your eyes to the sky on November 8, 2022. This will be the second and final total lunar eclipse of the year.
