New retail, restaurants heading to uptown tower after $25M revamp

CHARLOTTE — One Independence Center is wrapping up its $25 million renovation uptown — with new restaurants and retail tenants set to be announced soon. That 20-story, nearly 547,000-square-foot office building is at the intersection of Trade and Tryon streets. Crescent Communities and Nuveen Real Estate acquired that tower in 2019 for $132.3 million.

Construction started in 2020 to refresh the lobby and retail space, including the addition of outdoor seating. A new building entrance was added along Tryon Street. The atrium connecting the office building to Charlotte Marriott City Center and The Ivey’s hotels also was updated.

The revamp brings 25,000 square feet of ground-floor retail across five spaces.

“We really felt like the ground-floor experience here was lacking,” says Alex Hondros, Crescent director of asset management and acquisitions.
