New women's clothing store, Rome Kwik Trip, Sand Valley updates

Happy Tuesday and welcome to the Streetwise Newsletter!

Most recently, I shared that Los Victor's Mexican Food California Style will reopen Thursday at 301 Division St. in Stevens Point. The restaurant had been closed because of a lack of employees, but the owners told me last week they would reopen with a new team Thursday.

Have you been to the new women's clothing store in Plover? Daily Thread opened May 6 at 1120 Meridian Drive in Plover. That's the former Christopher & Banks store. It offers a new selection of affordable fashion each week and carries petite, missy and extended sizes.

I also shared updates from the Opera House in Stevens Point and the new restaurant planned for Artist & Fare in Plover. Both projects have been delayed because of labor and material shortages.

Next summer, you'll be able to connect and learn more about local food and agriculture at a new Food + Farm Exploration Center in Plover. It's a project of the Farming for the Future Foundation, which was established in 2018. The center will be a teaching farm, a children's museum, a science center and community workshop that focuses on celebrating food and farming.

There are also some new updates for the Wisconsin Rapids area, including a Wisconsin Rapids Car Wash planned for 4120 Eighth St. S. that has three lanes with pay kiosks under a canopy and a vacuum stall.

Readers can stop at From the Ground Up Coffee House & Roastery in Wisconsin Rapids and check out the Little Free Library inside. Anyone can take a book or leave one while enjoying some coffee house treats.

There also are updates on the former Pritzl's Trading Post in Rome. Kwik Trip purchased the site when it closed in December and has been remodeling the property. Kwik Trip will open at 5 a.m. May 19 at 251 State 13 in Rome.

When Pritzl's closed in December, it left some missing services in the community, and Kwik Trip was not able to fill all of those needs, especially in areas like hunting, fishing and other outdoor supplies. In order to help bridge that gap, Kwik Trip is leasing space inside to a new store called Rome Outdoors. It will open at 6 a.m. May 19 inside the brand new Kwik Trip. The store will offer basic bait and tackle supplies when it opens, but some items have been delayed because of supply chain issues. As orders come in from distributors, customers will be able to find camping, boating, hunting and additional fishing supplies, as well.

Rome has more expansions to celebrate, too. Sand Valley announced plans for a new 18-hole golf course, restaurants, tennis center, pool house and a chance to live in brand new homes on-site. The golf resort is starting construction this month on its Sedge Village expansion, including the new golf course called Sedge Valley, opening in 2024. A new smokehouse restaurant, 6-acre putting course, an interactive golf entertainment center and game arcade will also open in 2024. Some new features like a pool house with infinity pool, sauna and steam and cold plunges. A 13,000-square-foot Tennis Center will open next year. Buyers who want to live at Sedge Valley can work with an architect to design seasonal or year-round homes at Sedge Village Estate or choose a smaller Sedge Village Cottage, as well.

Team Schierl Cos. also recently sold its 26 The Store properties in Wisconsin and Michigan to a REIT. According to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, it's a company that owns real estate or related assets that produce income, like office buildings, shopping malls, apartments, hotels and self-storage facilities. Team Schierl Cos. still owns all The Store equipment, fixtures and inventory and will continue operating the stores. The sale does not impact employment at any The Store locations.

I also covered an informational picket demonstration that was organized by Canadian National Railroad workers in Stevens Point. A group of about 20 workers gathered May 4 to call for better pay, an increase in away-from home expenses and sick days.
