Tyler Soderstrom heating up with the weather

Expectations for Tyler Soderstrom were high entering this season. He had hit the ground running in Stockton in 2021, quickly showing that he was more than capable of handling the league offensively. While the Oakland A’s were going to take their time with him due to his age and lack of experience behind the plate, the bat was not expected to be an issue.

Instead, Soderstrom got off to a slow start in Lansing. He had a .159/.232/.317 batting line with two homers in April, numbers that were far below what anyone would have expected. There was no reason to be concerned as it was just 18 games, but that slower start was certainly noteworthy.

As the weather has started to warm up, so too has Soderstrom’s bat. He has begun to look like the player the A’s had expected, producing a .260/.345/.580 batting line with four homers thus far in May. He even hit the second triple of his professional career and hit a walk-off grand slam on May 12.

It should not be a surprise that Soderstrom needed some time to adjust. Competition is better at High-A and pitchers are starting to learn how to exploit weaknesses and adjust themselves. Despite his advanced approach, Soderstrom was going to need to learn how to adjust as opposing pitchers looked to exploit his weaknesses.

He is starting to do exactly that. Soderstrom needed some time, as all younger players do, in order to find himself once more. He is going to struggle in the future, but he will adjust. The future is still bright for the A’s top prospect.
