YAKIMA -- UPDATE: A judge set bail at $1 million dollars for the 18-year-old accused of killing a Yakima man in a drive-by shooting this weekend.
During the preliminary hearing the defense brought up irregularities and discrepancies in his supposed confession, saying details don't match up and that the interrogation happened after the suspect asked to call someone.
Yakima police are investigating after a man was shot and killed this weekend.
Police say 911 got the call of shots fired early Sunday just before 12:30 a.m. in the area of the 900 block of LaSalle Street.
YPD says an officer was nearby when they heard a second volley of gunfire right out.
Police spotted the suspect vehicle, a silver Honda Accord as it turned out of LaSalle Street onto Fair Avenue.
The officer tried to stop the car but says it fled on Pacific Street before crashing into a house at 900 South 7th Street.
Two teen, and 18-year-old and 16-year-old were taken into custody.
Police say near the crashed car they found a sawed off .223 caliber Mini-14 rifle along with evidence of shooting inside the car.
“Our patrol officers and detectives did such a great job getting these two suspects off the street quickly,” said Yakima Police Captain Jay Seely. “We will now turn them over to Prosecutor Joe Brusic and his team to hold them accountable for their actions.”
While police were chasing the car a call to 911 reported a man had been shot in the chest on the 900 block of LaSalle Street and wasn't breathing.
Officers responded and gave CPR, but the 43-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told police the silver Accord drove slowly by the house three times, circling the block and on the first and third passes shooters fired from the car, hitting the house and the victim.
Police say during an interrogation the 18-year-old admitted to his involvement in the shooting on LaSalle Street as well as in the homicide of Joey Cantu on October 30, 2021 on 405 W Chestnut Street.
He was booked into Yakima County Jail on charges of 1st degree murder, 1st degree assault, drive-by shooting, eluding, and unlawful possession of a firearm 2nd degree.
The 16-year-old was booked into the Yakima County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of 1st degree murder, 1st degree assault, and drive-by shooting.
