One man is dead and another person was hurt in a crash between two commercial motor vehicles on Hwy 54 near Nara Visa, NM by the Texas state line on Sunday morning.
At about 9:30 a.m., a 2022 Freightliner CMV, driven by a 55-year-old man, was traveling east on Hwy 54, according to the New Mexico State Police's initial investigation.
For unknown reasons, near Milepost 346, the Freightliner crossed over the center stripe line into the westbound lane where it sideswiped another CMV, a 2018 Volvo that was traveling west.
Following the collision, the Volvo left the roadway and overturned.
The Volvo's driver, 41-year-old Roger Craghead, of Knob Noster, Mo., sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
The driver of the Freightliner sustained unknown injuries and was treated and released at an area hospital.
Police said alcohol was not a contributing factor in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation by the NMSP.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, the driver of the Freightliner may face charges.
