Former Upstate teacher celebrates 106th birthday at school
A special celebration was held earlier this month for a former Upstate teacher who turned 106 years old.Ella Mae Colbert taught at Chesnee Elementary School starting in 1961.She was the first African American woman to work at the school, according to Spartanburg County School District Two.The celebration was held at the school and city officials gave her a police escort to the party.When asked how it felt to turn 106, this is what Mrs. Colbert had to say:"I can't tell the difference. Somehow the time just runs up on me. And somebody else will go to tell about 105..106. I go to thinking about it. I don't feel it though. Don't feel like it."The city also named May 11 Ella Mae Colbert Day.
