STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Parts of Staten Island saw a heavy bout of rainfall and lightning early Monday afternoon, but that’s nothing compared to what’s on the way, according to local forecasts.
“We are dealing with some thunderstorms now, but they’re not expected to produce a lot in the way of damage,” explained AccuWeather senior meteorologist Randy Adkins. “The possibility of damaging winds and tornado activity is expected to hold off until later in the afternoon.”
AccuWeather has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m. Monday, while the National Weather Service also is cautioning residents about “severe storms, damaging winds and large hail” across parts of the borough.
Adkins predicted the weather system should reach the area by 4 or 5 p.m., adding that while a tornado is possible given the current weather conditions, it’s unlikely.
“(The storm) should move through the region fairly quickly, and then behind that may be a stray shower or thunderstorm in the early part of the evening,” Adkins said.
Temperatures are expected to hover around 70 degrees throughout the remainder of the day, with an 80% chance of precipitation.
A coastal flooding statement also is in effect for the Island.
Minor flooding is possible in more vulnerable areas near the shoreline, while motorists are cautioned against driving through flooded roadways.
LOOKING AHEAD
There remains a slight chance of showers between 9 and 11 p.m. Monday with temperatures dropping to the mid-50s, according to the National Weather Service forecast.
Once the storms passes, mostly sunny skies are forecast for Tuesday with a high of 73 degrees. Then, partly sunny skies and high temperatures ranging from the mid- to high-70s are expected through the remainder of the work week.
