May 12 meeting

KEY ACTION Approved the purchase of a Caterpillar backhoe at a cost of $75,100. 

DISCUSSION: Council agreed half of the purchase will be paid from the donation of Reeves Foundation grant. The new equipment will allow the interchanging of attachments with other townships that will benefit the village and local townships for working on projects together. 

In another matter, at the April 28, meeting Councilman Roy Burnham resigned. Councilman Brian Polen resigned earlier in the month. Council appointed Rick Cain and Jan Slutz to fill the vacant council seats. 

OTHER ACTION

• Heard Mayor Laurie Green will attend the Mayor’s Conference on June 8-9. 

• Heard Burnham and Gary VanMeter were hired as part-time street laborers on April 28.  VanMeter is for summer employment only. 

• Gave Street Supervisor Sam Moore approval to purchase necessary supplies to complete the catch basin repairs. 

• Learned the Grant Street culvert was replaced with American Rescue Plan funds, at a cost of $31,000. The county engineer’s department managed the project. Sandy, Fairfield and Warren townships also assisted in the project.

• Heard the zoning committee will be sending letters to those with mowing violations and other violations, such as junk, to several property owners.

• Volunteers are needed to help at Little Twist on Mineral event to be held from 4 to 11 p.m. July 9 at the fire station. There will be a food truck, brew garden, band, kids’ games, car show, bike rodeo, and fireworks. Thirty-five bicycle helmets and three bicycles have been donated for giveaways. Those wanting to volunteer contact Nikki Moore or visit the Little Twist on Mineral Facebook page. 

• The fire department, in conjunction with the Red Cross, will be distributing free smoke detectors. Anyone wanting to receive one call the fire department at 330-859-2226.
