DeKalb County Courthouse, Sycamore

A jury in DeKalb County on Friday found that a Plano bar is partially responsible for the death of a Sandwich man in a 2015 crash at Route 34 and Old Route 34 in Sandwich. A jury ordered the now closed Q Bar, and its landlord TKK Investments, to pay $2.4 million in damages to the estate of 25-year-old Chastin Pawson, of Sandwich.

The attorney representing Pawson's family, Nicholas Cronauer, says that on Sunday, June 28 2015, the Q Bar stayed open past the required 2 AM closing time and over served several patrons, including Pawson. Pawson was a passenger in a vehicle which was driven by another person who was at the bar, resulting in both of the men's deaths in a fiery crash.

Cronauer notes that the jury did partially find Pawson at fault in the case meaning that about $2.4 million, out of the overall damages of $4 million, will go to his estate.

Cronauer says that the jury's verdict shows that bar owners need to follow the rules and ordinances in place.

Cronauer notes that the bar had a chance to settle the case out of court for what he says is a reasonable amount of money, but chose not to.

WSPY news did reach out to Q Bar's attorney for comment.
