Child killed when car collides with tractor on Alabama highway

A child was killed Sunday when the SUV in which he was riding collided with an attachment on a farm tractor on a stretch of Alabama highway.

Alabama state troopers reported the two-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 1:58 p.m. Sunday on Alabama 189, approximately 5 miles east of Opp, Alabama, in Coffee County.

The name and age of the child was not released, but trooper said the child was from Georgia and was a passenger in a 2021 Jeep Compass driven by Michael R. Lantrip, 61, of Covington, Georgia.

Lantrip’s vehicle collided with the attachment of a 2012 John Deere tractor driven by James R. Waite Jr., 51, of Andalusia, Alabama.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.

Lantrip and three other passengers sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not reported.
