Lady Tigers Beat Carthage to Advance (Photos)

The Lady Tigers kept their season alive with an opening-round win of the district soccer tournament at Kickapoo Saturday. Republic (5) knocked off Carthage (4) 2-1, avenging a regular-season loss at Carthage.

The Lady Tigers scored first when Cadence Lugar played the ball ahead to Cameron Burton, who scored on a breakaway late in the first half. Republic made the score 2-0 early in the second half when Josalyn Weymuth connected off a cross from Molly Blades.

“Carthage is a good team. It was a tough win,” said coach Kevin Hauck. “I was proud of how the girls fought, and (we) had some girls off the bench play some good minutes for us, which helped because it was hot. Graci (Coleman) made a couple really big saves in the second half.”

Carthage scored its only goal with about three minutes remaining.

Republic will play top-seeded Kickapoo in the semifinals at 5:00 pm Tuesday.
