A program started by the 6th Grade Soar Class at Centralia Junior High has raised more than $1,000 that will be utilized to feed Ukrainian refugees.

SOAR teacher Mike Morris explained how the program got started.

“My students had been looking at some kind of fundraising project, and when the war happened they chose a way to help the Ukrainian people.  We settled on World Central Kitchen.  Another class joined us here at the junior high, Mrs. White’s 6th-grade class sold suckers at lunch and we sold bracelets to the middle school, junior high, and at Schiller School, one afternoon and raised $950.70.”

Then the Act of Random Kindness Club at Centralia High School learned of the drive and wanted to help. Member Loren Verble says they then came up with a fundraiser.

“We designed a shirt that said treat people with kindness and we sold those to the public and CHS students.  And those ended up raising us $185 to give to the CJHS Soar Club for this awesome thing they are doing.”

Members of the SOAR class, including Stephanie Minor, were pleased with the outcome of their efforts.

“The feeling of helping so many people and knowing that we raised so much money for them is very exciting and brings me joy just thinking about it.”

Representatives of the Centralia High School group came to Centralia Junior High Monday morning to finalize the fundraising effort.
