How Would Proposed “Project Phoenix Community Complex” be Funded?

Adrian, MI – A large portion of the lengthy meeting of the Lenawee County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday revolved around the proposed ‘Project Phoenix’…a sports and community complex that would be built at the old Tecumseh Products site..if approved.

The big question is, obviously, who will pay for it? And how much would a project like this cost? The Commission has been presented with two types of facilities…ranging from about $64 million to $88 million.

Lenawee County Administration has said that they are applying for grants that could cover anywhere from $40-$50 million worth. It has also been said by the Administration that there are private donors that will put money into the project. That amount has yet to be disclosed.

Taxpayers, and several governing bodies in Lenawee County, have spoken out against their tax dollars going towards the project. Individuals in favor of it speak highly of the social and economic impacts a facility like this could bring to Lenawee.

One Commissioner that has come out against the project is Terry Collins, the representative for the western side of the city of Adrian. He told WLEN News after the meeting on Wednesday that he doesn’t feel like the County is any further along on Project Phoenix because they don’t have exact numbers yet…

Chairman David Stimpson…the representative for the City of Tecumseh… told WLEN News that the county is ‘dotting their eyes and crossing their tees’… and that once they have a concrete plan, then they will send it out to the different jurisdictions in Lenawee County…
