A Mobile elementary school, Mary B. Austin, went on a secured perimeter Monday after officials were notified about a potential threat.
Officials tell NBC 15 this all started after a faculty member at the University of South Alabama was threatened by a student, who also threatened his family. That man is now in custody.
At this time we don't know if the threat was made verbally or electronically however, official quickly apprehended Atem Kuot before anything could happen.
"We were notified that a family of ours at Mary B. Austin had received a threat," Mobile County Public School System Communications Director Rena Phillips said.
That threat was allegedly made by Kuot, prompting Mary B. Austin Elementary school to be put on a secured perimeter.
"What the means is that all doors were locked, which they generally already all locked, we just make sure they are all locked and we limit the outdoor activities to keep our students safe," Phillips said.
Officials at the USA sent us the following statement in regards to the incident:
This morning a University of South Alabama faculty member reported that a student had threatened him and his family. USA police quickly located a suspect and took him into custody. Atem Diany Kuot was booked into Mobile County Metro Jail on a charge of making terrorist threats.
This is video of Kuot in May 2021 at the Michell Center when he was a candidate for a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.
"The person was apprehended off campus miles away," Phillips said.
Kuot was arrested miles away on campus at the USA about an hour after Mary B. Austin was placed on a secured perimeter.
"We were notified that the person was apprehended so there was no longer a threat but out of an abundance of caution we kept the school in secured perimeter today," Phillips added.
Phillips also noted that Mary B. Austin's Principal sent out an email to parents alerting them about the situation.
