Lehigh Valley weather: Some school districts shutting early with severe storms in forecast

UPDATE: Lehigh Valley weather: Severe thunderstorm watch in place until 8 p.m.

Due to the afternoon forecast for severe weather, some Lehigh Valley school districts decided to release students early Monday afternoon.

The Catasauqua Area School District was releasing high school and middle school students at 12:30 p.m. and Sheckler Elementary students at 1:15 p.m., the district said on Facebook.

“My apologies for the emergency announcement and any inconvenience this may cause,” Superintendent Robert Spengler wrote. “However, due to the timing, severity, and duration of the predicted storm event, I feel it is wise to dismiss our students early to the safety of their homes and families. Please be safe!”

  • Centennial School in Bethlehem was shutting at 1:45 p.m., WFMZ said.
  • Executive Education Academy Charter School was releasing some students at 12:30 p.m. and Bethlehem students at 1 p.m., the school said on Facebook.
  • Lehigh Christian Academy was to shut at 1:30 p.m., it said on Facebook.
  • Lincoln Leadership Academy Charter School buses were to leave at 12:15 p.m. (Northampton), 1 p.m. (Catasauqua), 12:30 p.m. (Whitehall Township), 12:30-12:45 p.m. (Salisbury Township), 12:45 - 1:30 p.m. (Allentown), 12:45 p.m. (Bethlehem) and 12:45 p.m. (Parkland). Walkers and pickups were to leave at 12:45 p.m., the school said on Facebook.
  • The Northampton Area School District was to release students in grades six through 12 at 12:15 p.m. and students in kindergarten through fifth grade at 1:15 p.m., the district said on Facebook.
  • The Salisbury School District was to release middle and high school students at 12:45 p.m. and elementary school students at 1:30 p.m., the district said on Facebook.
  • “Out of an abundance of caution”, Seven Generations Charter School was to shut at noon, the school said on Facebook.
  • The Southern Lehigh School District was to release high school students at 1:25 p.m., middle school students at 1:35 p.m., and intermediate and elementary school students at 2:30 p.m., WFMZ said

Buses in the East Penn School District could be delayed or held at schools beyond normal dismissal time due to the potential for severe weather, the district said on Facebook. It would communicate any changes.

“Student safety will be our top priority today,” the district said on Facebook. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Strong and possibly severe storms were expected from mid to late afternoon as a cold front works from west to east, forecasts say.
