Should we rule out pickleball for Drew Brees, too?
Saints coach Dennis Allen was asked about Brees’ tweet from Sunday night, which was responding to a report by The Post’s Andrew Marchand that the quarterback was leaving NBC after one season.
“Despite speculation from media about my future this fall, I’m currently undecided,” Brees wrote. “I may work for NBC, I may play football again, I may focus on business and philanthropy, I may train for the pickleball tour, senior golf tour, coach my kids or all of the above. I’ll let you know.”
Allen thinks the 43-year-old Brees was kidding, and not seriously contemplating pulling a Tom Brady with a return to the field.
“My wife’s the one that told me about it because I don’t follow social media. So I thought, ‘That’s interesting, that’ll bring up some questions,’” Allen, who replaced Sean Payton this year, told reporters on Monday.
“I think it was a comment made in jest and we certainly haven’t had any conversations in that regard.”
Brees went right from the field to NBC studio work last season, but Marchand reported NBC soured on Brees as a potential “Sunday Night Football” replacement for analyst Cris Collinsworth.
The Saints brought back Jameis Winston as their starting quarterback, though he is recovering from a torn ACL. Veteran Andy Dalton was signed in the offseason to serve as Winston’s backup.
Not exactly overwhelming options in case Brees was serious about return.
“I don’t really want to live in those hypothetical worlds right now,” Allen said. “We’ll see where it all goes. But certainly, he caused a lot of interest, that’s for sure.”
