LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A 2-year-old boy was struck by a car while attending a church event Sunday afternoon in Lincoln County, according to troopers.

Highway Patrol responded at around 12:20 p.m. to the scene on Highway 16 Business near Mundy Road in Denver.

Troopers said the child was walking in the church’s parking lot before walking onto the road, in front of a car heading south. The boy was taken to a hospital in Charlotte with life-threatening injuries. Officials have not released an update on his condition.

“It was horrible, it was so horrible,” said Deborah Cooper, who lives across the street and saw the accident happen.

According to authorities, there were other people in the parking lot, but the child was not being “directly supervised” when the crash happened.

Cooper said there were several children in the parking lot of the Golden Age Tabernacle church when the boy walked into the roadway, where the speed limit is 45 miles per hour.

“All the little kids were out there playing, and why, this little baby ran out. They’ve been doing church here for two years and he just ran out,” she said.

Troopers said no charges have been filed against the driver, but said Lincoln County deputies are investigating to see if the person who was responsible for supervising the child will face any charges.

“It makes you think and make sure you keep an eye on them, and it’s scary. Like I said, you can’t take your eye away from them for a second,” said mother Katie Griffith, who heard about the crash.

No other details have been released at this point.
