After 40 years in pastoral ministry, the last 15 at Sharon UMC, Pastor Pete Harris is retiring. The community is invited to a “Celebration Open House” to be held at Sharon UMC Fellowship Hall (19890 W. Pleasant Lake Rd.), Saturday, May 21, from 1 to 5pm.

Besides Sharon, Rev. Harris has served United Methodist congregations in Ypsilanti, Lincoln Park, Flint, and Owosso, Michigan. Prior to coming to Michigan, he served in Dallas and Big Spring, Texas.

Asked about highlights of ministry at Sharon UMC, Pastor Pete said: “Leading the congregation in building the Fellowship Hall and new parsonage are perhaps the most visible accomplishments.

“What has meant the most to me is the commitment and hard work of the congregation begun six years ago as we looked to refocus the ministry and mission: We had become very inward focused. Launching on a process of change is always difficult. We took time to learn new ways to understand ourselves and our community. We discerned God’s leading as reflected in our vision statement: ‘Come. Follow Jesus. Partner with God. Serve the Community Together.‘”

Besides leading the congregation at Sharon UMC, Rev. Harris has been active in the wider Christian community, as a past member of the Civic Club, board member (vice president) of the Community Resource Center, and a frequent visitor of Dairy Queen!

“Jan and I have loved our time here in Manchester. And, in many ways, we have received so much love from the congregation and community. You will always be in our prayers!”

The last Sunday for Rev. and Mrs. Harris will be June 19. Their plans are to move to central Texas to be close to family … although the anticipated arrival of grandchild #8 in November will have them returning to the area.
