Sixers adamant on keeping Doc Rivers

- by

Reports have tumbled out in the hours since Philadelphia’s Game 6 defeat billing Rivers’ return as conditional, based on meetings the team might have with him and the priorities of all involved.  Sources who spoke to PhillyVoice have asserted there is no such plan on the organization’s part. The Sixers see Rivers as their coach moving forward, and there has been little debate about whether or not to keep him, as Morey’s press conference answer further drove home on Friday afternoon.

What’s the buzz on Twitter?

Dave Early @DavidEarly
The Sixers have said Doc Rivers will be back. But if you listen to Woj, Ramona, Fischer, Stein, it just doesn’t sound like this is an open and shut case just yet with the Lakers still “looming.”
Is there a win-win-win scenario here where Doc goes West?

Dwane Casey was Coach of the Year, plenty of TOR players still credit him w/ development. He didn’t *deserve* to be fired from Raptors.
But that’s not the question Masai Ujiri asked himself. He asked if DC gave his team the BEST possible title odds in the future. – 3:05 PM

My honest, tweet-length opinion on Doc Rivers:
He has a lot of positive traits as a coach. The 2008 title wasn’t strictly an accident or byproduct of the talent. But he’s stubborn as hell and his X’s and O’s haven’t evolved in years. The Lakers desperately need an innovator. – 2:19 PM

More on this storyline

Sixers have now watched three separate coaches since 2016 leave their bench from assistant roles (Mike D’Antoni, Monty Williams, and Ime Udoka) and make a conference finals within two years of taking the lead gig elsewhere. If nothing else, that should drive home their failure to capitalize during a run where they’ve had the high-end talent to compete.  For now, that doesn’t appear to be the thought process in Philadelphia. Morey and others within the organization have backed Rivers, showing no signs of trying to push him out the door. It’ll be easy enough to tell whether they’re making the right call — they didn’t offer him $8 million a year to remain in second-round stasis. -via Philly Voice / May 16, 2022
