EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 15, 2022) – For the final time as Northeast Conference competitors, Mount St. Mary's and Wagner's baseball teams met in New Jersey for a doubleheader. The Seahawks took the first contest, 11-3, but the Mountaineers split the doubleheader and salvaged the finale in comeback fashion with a 10-8 final. The Mount posted eight runs in the eighth to secure the victory.
A collective effort on offense led the charge in game two, as the team put together 10 runs off 10 hits and 10 free passes.
Jake Maske and
Ryan Fisher turned in multi-hit games, and
Efrain Correa, Jr. registered a pair of RBIS. In the opener,
Tyler Long and
Brady Drawbaugh each contributed two hits and an RBI, with Drawbaugh scoring once.
Bullpens provided the opportunity for a comeback in both contests.
Derek Huff and
Cooper Hoffman delivered scoreless outings in the first game, with
Bryant Shives and
Patrick Burke copying the display in the nightcap. Shives got the win and Burke earned the save.
Six runs in the second by Wagner sealed the deal in the early game. Highlights for the Mount included Long's RBI single in the fifth and Drawbaugh's RBI triple in the eighth.
Tristan McAlister made a leaping play to steal extra bases for a strong defensive play.
Correa and
Danny Salisbury got the nightcap off to a good start, combining for a 2-0 advantage before the Seahawks picked up a bat. But Wagner waited in the wings and stormed ahead with runs in the third, fourth and sixth.
Down 6-2 in the eighth, the Mount made their move. It started with
Tyler Grodell bringing home Correa on an RBI single – the first of four singles strung together to tie the score. Maske,
Shane Wockley and
Ryan Fisher delivered the hits. Rattled, the Seahawks pitching went wild, hitting two Mountaineers with the bases full and walking a third. McAlister hit a sacrifice fly to round out the rally.
Building a comeback of their own, Wagner cut their deficit to 10-8 until
Blake Beal got the outs he needed. Burke came on for the save, working around a leadoff walk to preserve the win.
The Mount plays their final three games at home this weekend, beginning Friday (May 19) against the Long Island Sharks.
