Norsemen sports round-up: Roland-Story boys qualify for state track in eight events, girls in nine

Eli Thorson qualified for the state co-ed track meet in four events for the Roland-Story boys at the 2A qualifying meet in Monroe May 12.

The Roland-Story track teams had a big day at the Class 2A state qualifying meet in Monroe May 12.

The two teams combined to qualify for state in 18 events. Both the girls and boys qualified in nine events.

The final team standings saw the girls place third out of 12 teams with 92 points. Williamsburg won with 146 and West Marshall was second with 94.

The Roland-Story boys scored 87 points to place fourth in a tight team race. Des Moines Christian won the boys title with 108 points, Pella Christian took second with 101 and Williamsburg was third with 94.

The Norse girls qualified for state in the shot put, discus, long jump, 800-meter run and 3,000 individually. In relays they advanced in the sprint medley, distance medley, 4x100 and 4x400.

Macy Friest won the shot put with a toss of 37 feet, 4.5 inches. She beat Colfax-Mingo's McKayla Smith by 1 inch for the title.

Madison Geise advanced on distance in the discus after placing third with a throw of 112-5. Colfax-Mingo's Kyra Lester won with a toss of 114-2 and South Hamilton's Mackenzy Grady was second with a distance of 112-9.

Lauryn Kilstofte won the 800 in 2:33.35, beating East Marshall's Ellie Hull (2:33.72) in a photo finish. Freshman Claire Truesdell took first in the 3,000 with a time of 11:53.08, finishing just ahead of the 11:57.19 run by Des Moines Chirstian's Ella Jicinsky.

Roland-Story's Lauryn Kilstofte wins the girls 800 at the 2A qualifying meet in Monroe May 12.

The Norse girls sprint medley team of Adalyn Sporleder, Reagan Faber, Kamryn Lande and Kilstofte won in 1:53.84, beating Williamsburg's 1:54.57 for first. Sporleder, Kennedy Petersen, Lande and Kilstofte ran a 4:24.50 in the distance medley to place second behind Williamsburg's 4:22.23.

The girls 4x100 team of Sporleder, Petersen, Faber and Lande qualified on time after placing third with a 51.03 showing. The Norse 4x400 team of Madi Bauer, Mary Britten, Lande and Kilstofte clocked in at 4:14.10 to take second behind West Marshall's 4:13.75.

On the boys side Roland-Story qualified for state in the 100, 200, 400, long jump, 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, 4x800 and sprint medley. 

Eli Thorson made it based on time in both the 100 and 200 after placing fifth in both races with respective times of 11.18 and 22.56. Kale Lande ran a 51.06 in the 400 to place second behind the 49.26 effort by Pella Christian's Levi Schelhaas.

Will Bunn won the long jump with a distance of 21-11.5 and teammate Nate Johnson was second after jumping 20-8.

Johnson, Bunn, Gavin Carpenter and Thorson won the 4x100 in 43.58. Jonovan Wilkinson joined Thorson, Carpenter and Bunn in running a 1:31.15 in the 4x200 to place second behind Williamsburg's 1:30.73.

Lande, Wilkinson, Hesston Johnson and Carpenter ran a 3:29.50 in the 4x400 to place second behind Pella Christian's 3:29.10. Cade Diehl, Ben Greenfield, Brayden Kilstofte and Hesston Johnson finished the 4x800 in 8:44.41 to take second behind Des Moines Christian's 8:30.06.

In the sprint medley Roland-Story's team of Nate Johnson, Bunn, Carpenter and Lande placed second with a time of 1:36.12. Pella Christian won in 1:35.17.

Norse win 2A regional girls golf meet

The Roland-Story girls golf team brought home a Class 2A regional team championship at the regional meet in Jefferson Friday.

The Norse shot a 356 over 18 holes to win the meet by 44 strokes at the Jefferson Memorial Golf Course. The dominant performance resulted in Roland-Story producing the top four individual scores.

Makenna Carlson won medalist with an 83 and Ellie Erickson was medalist runner-up with an 87. Mersaide Frankling and Gabriella Wakefield both carded a 93 to tie for third.

Roland-Story took second at the Gilbert Invitational May 10 at the Ames Golf and Country Club. The Norse shot a 188 to trail only defending 3A state champion Gilbert's 173 among six competing teams.

Erickson paced the Norse with a nine-hole score of 43 to place third individually. Carlson tied for fourth with a 44, Franklin tied for eighth with a 48 and Wakefield tied for 15th with a 53.

Gilbert's Eden Lohrbach was medalist with a 40. The Tigers' Haley Loonan was runner-up with a 41.

Roland-Story also won a triangular with Nevada and Van Meter May 9 at the Riverbend Golf Course in Story City.

The Norse girls shot a 194 over nine holes to beat Van Meter by 11 strokes and Nevada by 18.

Carlson was medalist runner-up with a 43. Nevada's Olivia Axmear won medalist with a 42.

Erickson placed third with a 46, Wakefield eighth with a 52 and Franklin ninth with a 53. Grace Corcoran came in 10th with a 55.

The Roland-Story boys place eighth at the 2A sectional meet in Jewell May 11. No Norse scoring was available at press time.
