(Atlantic) Atlantic elementary students got a glimpse of farm life and farm safety on Friday at Washington Elementary. Atlantic FFA Chapter Officers lined the lawn in front of the school with farm animals and the parking lot with machinery. The Officers and or animal science class members spoke to the youngsters about the animals, while others educated elementary students about farm safety.
The livestock on display included a draft horse, cow, cow-calf pair, donkey, and a llama. Eric Miller, High School, and Middle School Ag Instructor and FFA Advisor, explained this was a student-led event.
Miller says the goal is for the elementary students to understand a little bit more about agriculture in Iowa.
The display also included a machinery line, providing education on farm safety. The implements sequence had a tractor and rake, a grain gravity wagon demonstrating the dangers of flowing corn, and a baler and lawn mower.
Miller says the message is don’t get into a wagon or grain bin while unloading because nothing good will come out of it if something goes wrong.
