Eagles, Mother Nature Bring 2022 Little Rock Home Slate to a Close

Inclement weather halts game in the seventh inning

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Mother Nature left no room for error and no chance for a comeback. Trailing Georgia Southern 14-6 in the top of the seventh inning at Gary Hogan Field Sunday, Little Rock's 2022 home schedule came to a close as inclement weather brought the game to an early conclusion.

The early finish also brought to an end to the final home Sun Belt Conference event in Little Rock. The Trojans will move to the Ohio Valley Conference next season.

Little Rock (22-24, 10-16 Sun Belt) had already battled back twice in the game, pulling within two runs every time Georgia Southern (34-17, 20-7 Sun Belt) would try to pull away. It happened in the bottom of the second when the Trojans turned a 6-0 shutout into a 6-4 contest and then again in the fifth when, facing an 8-4 deficit Little Rock used back-to-back RBIs to bring the game back to a two-run margin at 8-6.

But after Georgia Southern pushed across four runs in the sixth, Little Rock was unable to score in the bottom half of the inning, the Eagles added two more in the top of the seventh before Mother Nature took over.

Nate Lyons led the Trojans with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with two RBIs in his final home game while Jorden Hussein, also a senior, was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.

The Eagles were led by Jesse Sherrill's 3-for-3 day with two runs scored while Sam Blancato was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Georgia Southern was lethal when backed into a corner, hitting 6-for-11 (.545) when faced with two outs.

Jacob Weatherly (1-3) was charged with the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits in the start. Jay Thompson (6-3) claimed the win for Georgia Southern with two runs allowed on six hits in 4.1 innings on the mound.

Little Rock will play at Central Arkansas on Tuesday evening in Conway. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the final Governor's I-40 Showdown battle of the season.
