Man shot, killed in New Castle

NEW CASTLE (KDKA) -- A 20-year-old man is dead and another person is in custody following a late-night shooting Sunday in Lawrence County.

First responders were called out to Bonzo Street just before 11:30 p.m. Sunday in New Castle. The coroner's office also was called to the scene.

Police said a patrolling officer heard gunshots and responded to the scene. A 21-year-old standing on a porch put his hands in the air and said he'd shot someone, police said. He was arrested, but police did not identify him.

Police said the officer found 20-year-old Miles Roberson lying on the sidewalk and tried to perform first aid, but Roberson died.

Officers from several departments were among those responding to the area.

Nearly a dozen police vehicles and crime tape surrounded the scene.

"I hear yelling down the street, 'call 911.' So I called 911," said Joshua Gault, who lives near the crime scene. "The next thing I know there's a whole big scene here."

Gault hopes his cal prevented any more violence from happening in the neighborhood.

"Hopefully, I do what any civilian would do around here," said Gault. "Call 911 and let the cops take care of it."

He says he's relieved the many children in the area were safe and sound at home.

"Honestly, all I have to say is: I'm glad it happened at night," said Gault. "No kids were out and about."

KDKA is working to learn more about what led to the incident.
