A strong storm system made its way through the metro area bringing heavy winds and rain with it.
George White Sr., a McDowell Road resident, said he and his wife were inches away from a tragic accident after a tree fell, nearly missing them in their home.
"We were laying down watching television and I didn't know what was going on," White said. "I heard the rumbling, then the house shook and everything, the lights went out. We came outside and it just demolished my truck in the driveway back there, and as you can see, it's laying on my wife's car. It's just a big old tree in the back yard. The wind and rain came; I guess that's what brought it all down."
The couple says they feel fortunate they are both safe.
The tree hit both of their vehicles, completely covering one and the nearby powerline.
The storm knocked out power for thousands of Mississippians. According to Entergy Mississippi, more than 8,000 residents in Hinds County were without power heading into Monday morning.
Madison County Schools officials said distance learning will be in effect Monday for Shirley D. Simmons Middle School because the power was out at the school.
