Two boaters were rescued by New Bern Fire-Rescue crews after their boat slammed into the Alfred J. Cunningham Bridge and got stuck.
Battalion Chief Gladson said crews were dispatched to the bridge shortly after 6:45 PM. They received a call from the Coast Guard that said there was a watercraft emergency with a male and female on board. When crews arrived, they found the boat wedged up against the bridge.
Chief Gladson said it is unclear why or how the boat lost control and slammed into the bridge, but a witness said it looked like the boat had mechanical steering issues.
"He was to the right of the bridge and the wind caught it and sent him directly into the bridge at the last second he turned off and hit the pillar, avoiding hitting the bridge. I was worried or him. It's a bad spot," witness Chris Hartung explained.
Crews dislodged the boat and got it out of the channel to safety by 7:20 PM. No injuries were reported.
