The Salem Community High School Gym was filled to near capacity for Sunday’s graduation ceremony that saw 139 seniors receive their diplomas.

Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering said the theme of this year’s graduation is small things.  He noted a number of ‘small things’ such as being the first graduating class to be able to take off their masks, embracing the new Wildcat logo on their sports uniforms, and having the largest number of graduates in the CNA program among others.

“To the Class of 2022, I challenge you as graduates and representatives of Salem Community High School to continue with such small things and watch for the big success that will ultimately follow.  We’ll be watching and cheering with our Salem Wildcat pride, make us proud, congratulations.”

This was the first year without a valedictorian and salutatorian as they were replaced with an honor going to all of those who finished high school with a 4.0 or greater grade point average.  Those recognized were Emily Abrams, Kailey Brubaker, Ryne Clark, Rylan Crane, Austin Crouse, Hunter Daniels, Elijah Davis, Sophia Doran, Mason Hampton, Brett Niepoetter, Mataya Petrea, Carmen Rodriquez, Brayden Smith, Emily Smith, and Aaron Wilzbach.

Kailey Brubaker gave the reflection speech about what the class has been through including the excitement of being able to return to in-person classes and then being able to take off their masks making it like a whole new world.  She congratulated the class on all their accomplishments.

Mataya Petrea addressed aspirations for the Class of 2022.  She noted the class worked extremely hard to accomplish their goals and would not be where they are today without the support of everyone filling the gym.  Petrea noted they are turning a page with graduation and now become responsible for their own future going forward.

“In the midst of graduates before me, I see an enormous amount of potential because underneath these caps and gowns I see determined students who will make great leaders.  I see students with kind parts who will show compassion to those around them in whatever work they may choose.  I see well-spoken students who have the potential to serve as a source of motivation.   I overall see students that will exceed with anything they put their minds to.”

After the diplomas were presented the ceremony ended quietly with no silly string or tossing of graduation caps that had been a tradition in past years.

Last year, SCHS graduation returned inside but a limited number of tickets were distributed and masks were required.
