Baseball Completes Series Sweep Of Rattlers

The Jackson State University baseball team concluded its home schedule with an impressive 13-2 win over Florida A&M in seven innings on senior day, completing a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series sweep.

As JSU honored six outgoing seniors, Jatavis Melton (two runs scored) and Jaelen Williams (two runs scored, three RBI) each had three hits. Marcus Atterberry also drove in three runs for Jackson State (26-25 overall, 13-14 SWAC), which will end the regular season against Mississippi Valley State in a three-game series this weekend.

Leading 4-2 after four innings, the Tigers broke the game open with a seven-run fifth. Melton led off the inning with a double down the left field line before Devontae Rhodes singled to third. Ty Hill then doubled to left center, scoring Melton. Caleb Evans reached on a fielding error as Rhodes scored to give JSU a 6-2 lead. Williams then reached on an infield single to load the bases before El'Rico Riley walked to score Evans for a 7-2 lead.

Atterberry's RBI groundout scored Evans, before Jefrey Rodriguez' squeeze bunt scored Williams. Riley then scored on a wild pitch for a 10-2 lead. Omar Gomez then walked and later scored on a double steal attempt for an 11-2 JSU lead.

Colby Guy went the distance for the win, allowing only four hits and two runs, walking one and striking out four.
