Selena Gomez’s ‘Only Murders’ Co-Star, Steve Martin, Made a Surprise Appearance During Her ‘SNL’ Episode

Last night, Selena Gomez hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time, and her episode ended up turning into an Only Murders in the Building reunion when one of her co-stars from the hit series, Steve Martin, made a surprise appearance.

Martin popped up during a pre-taped sketch titled, “Inventor Documentary.” In this fake trailer, he pretends to be a guest on a show called American Inventors, that is hosted by Taylor Gosh (Gomez). Gosh kicks off the clip, saying, “The automobile, paper cup, dancing, computer. These were all invented. But who did that, and what is their story? We begin with Archie Gizmo, the brilliant inventor of the whoopee cushion.”

The scene then jumps to an interview with Gizmo (Martin), who is credited as a “Prank Inventor” and the “Largest Patent Holder in History.” He begins his interview by saying, “Well, back in the ’60s, I was just a struggling gag inventor, and all I had was an early prototype of the cushion.”

Martin then goes on to explain his inspiration behind making the whoopee cushion, saying, “I knew it would be funny to have your boss sit down and a noise come from his butt, but I just couldn’t figure out what noise.” However, Gizmo finds his sound when he meets Ms. Dina Beans (Aidy Bryant) at a party, and she keeps farting every time she sits down.

In the rest of the comical clip, Ms. Beans becomes the inventor's muse, and he uses her antics to help him come up with other gag gifts, like the hand buzzer and electric gum.

While we loved seeing these two Only Murders actors come together for a sketch, this wasn't the only time Martin came up during the episode. In her opening monologue, Gomez mentioned working with the actor when she said, “I've been lucky enough to work with some Hollywood icons, from Steve Martin, Martin Short and of course, Barney.”

These sketches will help to tide us over while we wait for season 2 of Only Murders in the Building to premiere on June 28.
