Over the weekend, reports emerged saying that former Florida Gators head football coach Dan Mullen had found a new gig for the 2022 season. Mullen was believed to be heading to Lake Oconee Academy in Greensboro, Georgia as the school’s new offensive coordinator. Now, it appears that will not be the case.

On Sunday, Lance McCurley reported that the Mullen news was false, and that he will not be a coach on the school’s staff.

“The rumors that Dan Mullen will be the new offensive coordinator at Lake Oconee Academy are false,” McCurley tweeted. “I have confirmed that with multiple school officials this morning. However, he does reside in Greensboro, and his son toured the school this week. But he will not coaching.”

Graham Coffey from Dawg Sports added to the Mullen news, saying that he would instead be helping out the football program with no official title.

“Administrators at LOA previously confirmed that Mullen would be working as the OC of the school,” Coffey said. “Today the school has said that Mullen will be helping out with the football program as ‘a contributing resource’ with no official title. He will be a great resource for the program.”

Lake Oconee Academy’s statement on the Mullen coaching rumors

Following the conflicting reports over the past couple of days, Lake Oconee Academy athletic director Chris Ingle put out a statement, via McCurley, regarding Mullen. Ingle confirmed that Mullen will be a “contributing resource” for the school’s football team, though he won’t be an official coach on the coaching staff.

“Coach (Dan) Mullen will serve as a contributing resource to the football program and athletic department at Lake Oconee Academy,” Ingle told the Lake Oconee News. “Coach Mullen’s knowledge and experience in the game of football are world-class. We look forward to him sharing this with our coaches and student-athletes. He will offer tremendous insight and guiding direction into the building of our young program, especially in the areas of offense and quarterback development.”

Mullen put together a 34-15 record at Florida, but the Gators went just 13-10 over the past two seasons. He was fired at the end of last season.
