AUSTIN — Alli Scott of Moran and Rianne Hurst of Priddy looked at each other and smiled before taking their marks in the girls 100 hurdles at the state track and field meet Saturday — a sign of respect by rival hurdlers.

As Class 1A competitors from the Big Country, they were familiar with each other well before the event. Scott and Moran ran in two of the same meets earlier this season and competed against each other in the high jump earlier in the day.

Scott earned gold in the hurdles event, finishing in 15.73 seconds. Hurst also found a spot on the podium, posting a time of 15.96 to take bronze.

Their familiarity with each other only upped their desires to win the event.

“We were definitely competitive,” Hurst said.

While Scott defeated Hurst in the hurdles, Hurst got the better of her earlier in the day. She finished sixth in the high jump at 5-0, while Scott placed eighth at 4-10.

But more than competing against one another, Scott and Hurst enjoyed pushing each other.

“We supported each other,” Scott said. “We just got to talk more and have fun.”

Miller golden in triple jump

Woodson senior Hanna Miller withstood 100-degree heat and humidity to earn gold in the girls triple jump with a distance of 38-0.

Miller surpassed 37 feet on her second jump, when she leapt 37-1. But Miller didn’t feel like she could coast to the title.

“I knew it would be tough because, at state, your adrenaline is going,” Miller said. “You can jump anything. I just knew that if I went in and did my best that I could do it.”

That proved to be enough to win the title, however, as second-place Kaegen James finished at 37-0¼.

While Miller’s second jump won it, her last was her best. She sailed 38 feet to win by almost a foot.

The senior couldn’t have asked for a better attempt to end her career.

“I just had to do it,” Miller said. “It’s crazy. I’m so excited.”

Other medalists

Noah Escamilla from Robert Lee, the defending champion in the boys high jump, got a silver medal this year though he matched the conference record at 6-6.

May also won bronze in the girls discus, as Amanda Harrell threw 123-5 on her fifth attempt.
