Leonardtown Knocks Broadneck Baseball Out Of Playoffs

The Leonardtown Raiders made the far trek north to play the Broadneck Bruins and came away with a 9-3 win in the region semifinals on May 14. Strong pitching and baserunning carried the Raiders, while four errors hurt the Bruins’ chances of putting together a comeback.

The Raiders got the scoring going with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, two of which came when the Bruins shortstop sailed a throw to first into the Raiders dugout. The Bruins responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning off of a single and a sacrifice fly. However, the Raiders put the game away with five runs scored in the top of the sixth inning.

While the Raiders batted around, Broadneck’s hitters were unable to rattle Raiders pitcher Dylan Rowe, who had six strong innings on the mound as he gave up three runs and six hits.

Broadneck was looking to add to the school record 16 wins they had this season. Instead, they finished 16-4.

“When you woke up this morning, you didn’t think this was how it was gonna play out,” said Bruins head coach Matt Skrenchuk. “They should be very proud of the year they had. Right now, they don’t feel good about themselves, but they should be proud of the work they did.”
