One of the men rescued after 77-hours trapped inside the Quecreek Mine in 2002 has died.
An online obituary published Saturday said Dennis H. “Harpo” Hall, 68, died Friday at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown.
Hall was the seventh man pulled from 240 feet underground at the Somerset County mine during the early morning hours of July 28, 2002, following a rescue effort that began when the nine men became trapped inside a flooded shaft on the night of July 24.
"It was pretty crazy down there, but it was a good crazy," Hall said in a 2004 interview with WJAC. "There was a miracle that happened down on that field."
Hall said in the days after his rescue that would he return to mining one day, but never did. He said he never wanted to put his family through such an ordeal ever again.
"You feel like you were reborn, it gives you a new lease on life, try to change it someway, do more with your families, do some things you haven't done in your life, you never had the opportunity to do," Hall said in a 2003 interview with WJAC.
The "nine for nine" miracle rescue site is now a part of The Monument for Life Memorial Park.
